How Soon Should My New Baby Get Adjusted?

The Importance of Chiropractic Care Within the First Two Weeks Earth-Side

At Roots Wholistic Health, one of the most common questions we hear from new parents is: "When should my baby get their first adjustment?"Our answer? As soon as possible—ideally within the first two weeks of life.

The birthing process, whether it’s a natural delivery, a C-section, or anything in between, can be a physically intense experience for both mom and baby. Even in the most uncomplicated births, your newborn can experience tension, compression, or misalignments in the spine and cranium from being folded in half in utero, and as they make their way into the world. That’s why early chiropractic care can be such a powerful support during those tender first days and weeks.

Why So Soon?

Your baby’s nervous system is the master control center of their body—it regulates everything from digestion to sleep to immune function. The spine houses and protects that system, so when there’s any interference (from tension, torsion, tightness, or birth stress), it can affect how your baby functions and feels.

Pediatric chiropractic adjustments are incredibly gentle—using no more pressure than you’d use to check the ripeness of a tomato or avocado—and they can offer incredible relief and support as your newborn begins to adapt to life outside the womb.

What Can Pediatric Chiropractic Help With?

Nursing & Sucking: If your baby is having trouble latching or favoring one side, it could be due to misalignment or tightness in their neck, jaw, mouth, or cranial bones (head). Chiropractic adjustments can help restore proper function and comfort, making feeding a more peaceful and nourishing experience for both baby and mama.

Comfort & Calm: Many newborns hold residual tension from their position in the womb or the birthing process. Adjustments help release that tension, allowing your baby to relax more fully, rest more deeply, and feel more comfortable in their little body.

Adapting to the New Environment: The transition from womb to world is a big one! Chiropractic care supports your baby’s ability to regulate and adapt, helping with overstimulation, fussiness, and colicky behaviors.

Digestive Support: Struggling with gassiness, reflux, or constipation? That could be your baby’s nervous system signaling distress. Adjustments help regulate the nerves that connect to the digestive system, encouraging better gut function and less discomfort.

Better Sleep: Babies who are calm, well-adjusted, and comfortable tend to sleep more soundly. Many parents report improved sleep patterns and less nighttime waking after just a few visits.

Immune Support: A well-regulated nervous system supports a stronger immune response. That means your baby’s body is better equipped to handle common colds, fevers, ear infections, and other early life immune challenges.

The Nervous System Connection

At the heart of chiropractic care is the nervous system. Adjustments help ensure there’s no interference in the communication between your baby’s brain and body. This not only promotes better development but also helps your little one feel safe, soothed, and secure.

One of the most beautiful things we see in the office is a newborn fully relaxing in their parent’s arms after an adjustment—calm, connected, and peaceful. We call it the "Baby Melt". It’s a powerful reminder of how much support their little bodies sometimes need and how capable they are of thriving when their nervous system is relaxed and balanced.
